Wild space

What is the Wild Space?

a place to play, learn, laugh, relax, breathe, imagine and run around...

There is an area to the South and East of our school building which was originally planned to be part of the Forest School programme, but plans were cut due to funding issues during the building of the new school. The Federation is still very supportive of the space being used for our children, so we are raising funds to pay for Forest School training for staff and to develop a suitable play area while retaining an atmosphere of adventure and exploration.

Research shows that children benefit in many ways from a Forest School environment, developing social skills like team work and communication, emotional skills and intellectual skills.

In addition to the the Forest Schools curriculum, teachers could be trained to use the space for other subjects, for example art projects, science and reading, and for talking about wider themes, such as conservation, recycling and even PSHE.

Due to the limited space on our our site we’d like to develop an area rich with opportunities for our children ensuring that they have more contact with nature for play and as part of the curriculum. We have already cleared a lot of waste, ivy and nettles, created an edible garden area outside the Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms and bought wet weather clothing and wellies for 200 children with the support of the staff and parents.

The development of the space over the next three years could see us planting a wild flower area, a raspberry patch for the children to enjoy and some woodland ferns and bluebells under the beautiful old trees.

Some fixed structures, like rustic climbing frames, could encourage physical activity for the children, a designated fire pit for the Forest School and steps up the slope would improve safety and a mini amphitheatre or gazebo would allow teachers to have an outside classroom all year round.

How do we create it?

With your help… Your support for our fundraising efforts, your free time, ideas, helpful contacts and donations can make this all possible for our children.
