Are you able to volunteer to listen to children reading at school?

If so, we are looking for volunteers to sign up for weekly slots.

Here’s how it works:

  • Each volunteer commits to one time slot per week, supporting children from the same class. See below for the available slots.

  • The teachers will decide which children would most benefit from support. You will be reading with a year group that your child is not in.

  • You’d need to be able to commit for two Askian terms (ie. 12 weeks).

  • You need to undergo a DBS check (formerly known as CRB). This is straightforward, takes less than 2 weeks and is arranged through the school.

  • Each reading slot is about 30 minutes and most volunteers listen to 2 children in that time.

No specialist knowledge is required, just listening and helping the children to understand and enjoy their reading.

  • Slots are available every day at either 10am or 2.30pm with Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
